Serie A in decline?

Here is a link to a recent post on ESPN by David Mosse describing what he feels is an overall decline in the quality of play in Serie A. Its an interesting article that raises a valid point, but in the end I think that Mosse's arguments are pretty weak.

England's Premier League, with all of the money that has been introduced over the last 10 years or so has become what Serie A was for much of the 1980's and 1990's, the dominant league in Europe for foreign players. This was of course rivaled by Spain's La Liga, much as the Premier League is now. However, Serie A is still a very strong league with many great players, especially from South America. When you look through the rosters of many of the clubs you will find many of the top Brazilians and Argentinians, along with top players from many other countries in South America. There are also still many top European players as well, including Ibrahimovic. All you have to do is simply watch the games and you will see that the level of play is of a very high quality and just because David Beckham plays for A.C. Milan or Jose Mourinho says something in a press conference doesn't mean that its not a league of high quality.

The league is also recovering from a very big scandal, which included some of its major clubs. Juventus is only now starting to be the power that it was a few years ago, and other major clubs including A.C. Milan, Lazio, and Fiorentina were affected. It took the English Premier League years to rebound from the European ban in the 1980's and wasn't really until the middle part of the 1990's when the money started to flow into the Premier League that it did fully recover. The bottom line is that I think Mr. Mosse needs to provide more information on the supposed decline of Serie A before he can convince me that it is anything more then an aberration.
