Here is a link to an article written in the New York Times about how the New England Revolution and Chivas USA were knocked out of the CONCACAF Champions League at the preliminary round stage and they won't make the final 16 of the competition. At the end of the article the writer Jack Bell asks questions about whether the MLS teams are playing too many games, or whether the other clubs were better then they were originally given credit for.
I think its a combination of both. MLS has setup a lot of what I feel are unnecessary games such as the Superliga, and friendly matches that are held in the middle of the season, All Star games, etc. The MLS clubs should be focused on 3 things, winning the league, winning the U.S Open Cup, and winning the CONCACAF Champions League. Nothing else should be a priority for the MLS clubs other then those 3 competitions. Possibly only the World Club Championship if one of the MLS clubs are lucky enough to win the CONCACAF Champions League and qualify. Those 3 competitions are what every major club across Europe are focused on and those should be given the priority and promotion by MLS. It will take a few years at least for the fans to catch on and learn for example, who Joe Public are. However, given time and promotion they will learn more about the other teams in the region and in the other U.S. leagues and MLS will be setup just like the rest of the world, the way it should be.
MLS should also look into expanding each team's squad a little bit because within a few years they are going to have a full sized league and with these other competitions a top team such as the New England Revolution will be expected to play more games then they currently do. The clubs do need to be prepared, especially if they are forced into unnecessary games as I have outlined.
