I just wanted to include a link and comment on this article by Kartik Krishnaiyer on the Major League Soccer Talk blog about Sven Goran Eriksson's early success with the Mexican national team and how the U.S. National Team could learn from that. I essentially agree that Eriksson has done a good job with Mexico and that I too was somewhat skeptical about this appointment when it was made.
I think a couple of important points though are that Mexico has a lot of young talent coming through (a few are mentioned by Krishnaiyer). This might be the most talented Mexican team that I have ever seen and they could really emerge as a team to be reckoned with at the next World Cup.
I also think we can all agree that the current U.S. National Team is lacking in talent compared to some of its other teams in recent years. Many young players that U.S. Soccer was hoping to have emerged by now haven't done so and even the players like Donovan and Beasley that are the players in their prime and that we all expect to be leading the team haven't really lived up to what we were all hoping from them. Both are good solid players, but neither has emerged as a true star. Freddy Adu, while still very young hasn't emerged as a star yet. Players like Santino Quaranta and Alecko Eskandarian, just to name a couple, haven't emerged. I think by now, U.S. Soccer had hoped that one of these players would have emerged as a top class forward that would be playing for one of the top teams in Europe. As a result, the U.S. National Team is scrambling to replace Brian McBride who was a good player in his prime, but never one of the top forwards in the game.
That is also just looking at the one position as well. Throughout the lineup, in midfield, defense, and even at goalie, the talent level is not what is was a few years ago. I think when you combine those factors Sven Goran Eriksson is of course going to look good if he can get the talent that Mexico has to play together. By the same token, its also very easy to point the finger of blame at Bob Bradley, but if you look through the lineups, he has tried all of the players that we want him to play. There are times when I think he should give some of the younger players more of a chance, but ultimately where is all of this talent going to come from?
