I don't really know too much about either player that Liverpool and Everton signed on the transfer deadline day, but I'll give my comments based upon what I've read.
Liverpool seemed to get the player they wanted in Albert Riera, a left winger who should provide a lot of ammunition for Fernando Torres, Robbie Keane, and the rest of Liverpool's goal scorers. Rafa Benitez is very high on him, but I still would have preferred to see them sign a true right winger in the class of Ricardo Quaresma. The lack of a player to break down opposing defenses and provide the chances for Liverpool's strikers is their main weakness right now and although probably too expensive for Liverpool right now, Quaresma is exactly what they needed. Riera and Ryan Babel both are left wingers and we'll have to see if either are capable of being a top class one at that. I still have a lot of questions about Yossi Benayoun and Jermaine Pennant.
Everton made a big splash by breaking their own transfer record and signing Marouane Fellaini from Standard Liege. He seemed to have a good run for Belgium at the recent Olympic games and with Standard Liege, making a name for himself and now securing a big money transfer. I'm not sure exactly what position he will occupy in Everton's midfield, but with Tim Cahill already established as the attacking midfielder, it will be interesting to see how they utilize him.
