Landon Donovan to Bayern Munich?

According to this article on Sports Illustrated's website, Bayern Munich were interested at one point in signing Landon Donovan and may still sign him during the winter transfer period. The article describes how Bayern's manager Jurgen Klinsmann was interested in signing Landon, but the Board of Directors were concerned because of Landon's previous experiences in the Bundesliga.

I really hope that this move does go through as it really would be a great opportunity for Landon to finally prove that he is a top class player. I think that he has matured to the point that he would finally be able to make it at a big club in a big league in Europe and would improve immensely as a player. There really isn't much more for him to accomplish in MLS, although the league would suffer by losing one of its marquee players. If Landon decides that he just doesn't want to leave MLS I think he will be sacrificing something by never getting the opportunity to play in a team of players where there are players who are at least as good as him and some who are even better.

One could argue that when he plays for the U.S National Team that he is playing with a group of players that are as talented as he is and some might be better, but it isn't the same as playing at Bayern Munich. There is no Luca Toni, Bastien Schweinsteiger, or Franck Ribery in the U.S. National Team. We'll see what ends up happening as for now its just a rumor, but one that I hope ultimately ends up working out.
