Soccer is coming back in many of the leagues throughout Europe. The English Premier League had a rather slow start with the Charity Shield game between Manchester United and Portsmouth, which ended 0-0 and then went to penalty kicks where Man U won easily.
In France, Lyon got off the a strong start, with Karim Benzema scoring 2 goals to lead them to a 3-0 victory over Toulouse.
In Scotland, the Premier League started with Celtic getting past St. Mirren 1-0 thanks to a Barry Robson goal.
In addition, the transfer market is winding down and some clubs are still looking to make moves. According to this article in the London Times, Everton have signed Brazilian forward Vagner Love on a season long loan, and they have also signed Cameroon international Stéphane M’Bia. Everton are also still pursing the Portuguese midfielder João Moutinho from Sporting Lisbon. If they are able to pull off all of these moves they will definitely contend with Tottenham for the team that most improved via the transfer market and could possibly make their way into the top 4 places in the Premier League. It should be some interesting times across Europe during the next few weeks.
