I found this article by Luis Bueno that was written for Sports Illustrated to be very interesting. Luis describes some of the results that MLS clubs have been able to achieve against their Mexican opposition. As a result the MLS clubs are gaining some respect amongst the Mexican teams and some of their players. Luis goes on to mention the possibility of having a MLS club participate in the Copa Libertadores as an invited guest similar to some of the Mexican clubs in recent years. Personally, as I've already stated I am against the Superliga and in favor of the CONCACAF Champions League.
In order to be consistent I must say that I am also against the idea of a MLS club participating in the Copa Libertadores. I really think that the CONCACAF nations need to put their resources into the CONCACAF Champions League, promote and market it properly, and try to sell that tournament to the public. I also happen to feel that it would be exciting to see MLS clubs go against opposition from countries besides Mexico. It would greatly benefit these clubs in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Jamaica, etc. and would go towards having a legitimate champion from this region to participate in the World Club Championships each year. All of these other ideas and tournaments to me are short-sighted in that they are obvious grabs to obtain quick revenue for today. MLS and the entire CONCACAF region needs to look at not only today, but also tomorrow and years from now. By building and developing a legitimate regional tournament to determine the best club team from the region is the way to go. Its what has already been proven to work in the rest of the world and it can work here if given the opportunity.
