Superliga should be Champions Liga

I've been reading about the different results from the Superliga, the tournament between top clubs from MLS and the Mexican Primera División and I can think about our - where are the rest of the CONCACAF clubs? The entire region is missing the point, there are other countries that have their own leagues and clubs with their own traditions. Why aren't these clubs included, and ultimately what does it mean if you win the Superliga? Are the fans of any of these teams going to be that excited about winning a self-created league with no apparent purpose?

I think the promotion and focus should be poured into the upcoming CONCACAF Champions League, which includes representation from all of the CONCACAF nations and if marketed properly could provide a very exciting tournament for fans in all of these countries. I'm not saying that it will replace the European Champions League or Copa Libertadores in terms of popularity, but it would expose fans from each nation to the clubs from the other countries and make CONCACAF a more cohesive region within the FIFA structure. Given the proper amount of time and support, this competition can grow and benefit all of the leagues involved. Think about the competition that currently exists in Europe beyond just winning the Championship of the League, but also to grab one of the qualifying spots for the European competitions. This same kind of competition will eventually emerge within say MLS as it provides greater revenue opportunities, but more importantly an opportunity for the fans to watch their team against the best that the region has to offer. It also could lead to matches against the champions of Europe, South America, and so on.

The bottom line for me is that the Superliga should be abandoned. It was a poor idea from the beginning as MLS and the Mexican Primera División should be putting their resources into the CONCACAF Champions League to help it grow into the premier competition within this region. This is the way to move forward as a region and having too many competition dilutes the product and creates too much confusion amongst the fans.
