So now what is Brad Guzan supposed to do?

Well Blackburn Rovers have just signed one of England's international goalkeepers in Paul Robinson from Tottenham which has allowed Brad Friedel to sign for Aston Villa, and as a result Brad Guzan will now be the backup. This isn't the best way to develop as a goalie, sitting on the bench and watching the games. The top American players should be moving to clubs where they will be given an opportunity to start. At least when Tim Howard moved to Manchester United a few years ago he was given an opportunity to win the starting place. With so much at stake in Guzan's career the move to Aston Villa just doesn't seem like the right one now, especially with the World Cup qualifiers coming up. It will be hard for him to earn a spot in the starting XI for the U.S. National Team if he is not getting regular playing time like he would have been at Chivas USA.

ummm... Paul Robinson is going to Blackburn, which will allow Friedel to go to Aston Villa...

You're right Mel, my bad. I've updated my post to reflect was I was trying to convey, which was that Guzan should only transfer to a club where he can be the starter.

Who cares if it's Friedel, Robinson or anyone else. Guzan wasn't going to be challenged for the starting spot at Chivas USA. It was time for him to up the ante and go for it.

Thanks for the comment Allen. My opinion is basically that if he's going to move to a European club, go to one where he is the unquestioned starter. With Friedel at Aston Villa he will be the backup. At this point in his career Guzan should be starting, especially if he wants to earn the top spot for the U.S. National Team. I think this is fairly consistent with what Rick Davis was saying when I interviewed him and I put a lot of credit in his opinions.
