Paris St. Germain sign Makelele and Giuly

Some interesting news from the French Football League as Paris St. Germain have signed both Claude Makelele and Ludovic Giuly for next season. On the surface these seem like good signings, but I think it might be about time that Paris St. Germain start to develop a more long term plan for success. They have the potential to be one of the biggest clubs in Europe by playing in Paris with virtually no competition in terms of other big clubs to draw fans away from them (unlike London or Moscow for example). Yet they just can't seem to get it right in terms of putting together a championship winning squad and developing their own young players to carry them forward. While the French League is not one of the biggest in Europe, it still is a very big league and at the very least they should be able to sustain a challenge against Olympique Lyon.

Signing Makelele and Giuly may help in the short term, but they are not the answers. PSG should be going after better players and building up the squad to mount a title challenge and at the very least reach one of the qualification places for the European Champions League where they should be fixtures every year taking on Europe's best. Looking through their squad though, I just don't see the talent necessary to move forward.

Granted, its probably unrealistic to expect them to but Franck Ribery from Bayern Munich, but maybe they could at least put in some competitive bids for some of the young French players that leave the league each year, and maybe they could even go after a top French talent like Thierry Henry to lead their team for the next few years. He's not one for the future, but he still has some good years left and could have a huge impact upon the team. I don't really know what the answer is, but the question has been with me for some time as to why this club can't seem to get it together.
