Freddy Adu - ESPN Magazine article

I just wanted to include a link to an article that is in the recent issue of ESPN Magazine on Freddy Adu. Its a wonderful article by Carmen Renee Thompson that gives a great account of the pressures that Freddy Adu has had to face and how his development is coming along. All the way through the article she reminds us that he just turned 19 years old and still has plenty of time to develop his skill and become the star American player that we are all hoping for.

However, I'll include another link regarding Pablo Aimar's transfer to Benfica and it makes me wonder how this will affect Feddy's opportunities there. The Benfica manager is under tremendous pressure to win and is less likely to give Freddy a place in the starting XI when he has a more proven player at his disposal. Freddy has mainly been coming off the bench for Benfica and it looks like he might be in for another season of that unless perhaps he can change things with his performance at the Olympic Games.

Best thing for the kid is not to worry about the other players coming in and out. If he performs in these Olympics, it will take care of itself. This is his "big chance." (Of course, so was the U20s, but he basically cashed in on that one, so that chance sets up this chance.)

I disagree to a point. Its very easy to get lost in the shuffle at a big European club, which Benfica are for the Portuguese league. Adu needs to be at a club that will allow him to develop as a player, but will also give him the chance to be a starter and play the full 90. I agree with you though in that if he does perform well at the Olympics it will help his situation and perhaps he will move onto another club that will give him such an opportunity.

One thing that I really got from the article is that he's at a very crucial stage in his development and for his sake (along with that of the U.S.) he needs to make the right moves career-wise and that doesn't include sitting on the bench in Europe somewhere.
